Founded by Harvey Barnett, Ph.D., in 1966, ISR endeavored to put an end to a preventable tragedy: childhood drowning. A behavioral scientist by trade, Barnett adapted his theoretical knowledge of learning to pioneer the ISR Self-Rescue™ method used today to teach infants and young children to save themselves should they reach the water alone. ISR’s mission, “Not One More Child Drowns”, is the foundation behind each swim lesson.

With over 50 years of research and development, highly trained and certified Instructors committed to safety, and a proven history of success, parents can rest assured that their children are receiving the best possible instruction in the world today.
We believe pool fences, supervision, and pool alarms are important parts of a multi-layered approach to drowning prevention. However, the over 4,000 annual drowning deaths are a grim reminder that traditional approaches are missing a key component: the child.
Together we can work to save lives through safety education, survival swim lessons, and a commitmment to bettering our communities.
We know that children are curious and have an uncanny ability to overcome obstacles like pool fences or slip out the door in the blink of an eye. We teach the skills they need in case they do find themselves in the water alone.
WHAT MAKES ISR DIFFERENT?
ISR’s survival swim lessons are taught in a one-on-one lesson environment, tailored to each individual child. Unlike traditional group lessons, our program focuses on each child’s needs and puts their safety first.
Our technique is based on years of research and development taught by highly trained and certified instructors. At Water Monsters, we love to have fun, but our priority is always safety in and around water, and we have a proven history of success.
HOW IS ISR TAUGHT?
An important distinction between ISR and other programs is our emphasis on safety before, during and after lessons.
BEFORE LESSONS
Before beginning lessons, your child’s medical history is reviewed by a team of medical professionals to identify any potential health issues that may affect how your child’s lessons are taught.
DURING LESSONS
Your instructor will start each lesson with questions about how your child is feeling and their activity in the last 24 hours. Then, throughout the lesson she will check on your child’s energy level, ending the lesson early if ever necessary.
AFTER LESSONS
Our program includes comprehensive parent education on aquatic safety and drowning prevention. We also encourage parents to get in the water for a parent lesson once your child is fully skilled, so you can help your child practice and stay safe after your session is complete.
